The Frenship High School Spanish Club is hosting their first Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on October 7th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the FHS Cafeteria. The event is free and is open to the public to attend.  

The goal of the event is to educate others about Hispanic culture and spend time together as a community.  

“Our goal is for Frenship ISD students and the community to learn more about a culture that we share,” said Frenship High School Spanish teacher, Karla Albarez. “There will be Lotería tables, DIY mini piñatas, DIY tissue paper flowers, DIY mini ponchos, DIY ojos de Dios, Punch Cup game, Bean bag toss, Pin the tail on the Donkey, music, and PowerPoint Presentations of influential Hispanics made by our students in class.” 

The inspiration behind the event stemmed from wanting to dive deeper into the history of Hispanic Culture. 

“The inspiration came from the fact that we as teachers teach the language and the culture to our students, but we would like to extend this to the community,” said Albarez. “The Hispanic Culture is like an iceberg; we only know the most popular, but we want to show what else there is to it and why it is important. This idea came to us sponsors, but it has been the students who have taken the reins and have proceeded full speed.” 

In addition to the Spanish Club, members from the National Honor Society, Law Enforcement, and Culinary are also helping with the event. The Law Enforcement students are going to provide free fingerprinting. The Culinary students are making taco lunch plates for $5. There will also be Aguas frescas and fruit cups provided by the Culinary students as well.  

Albarez is looking forward to the big celebration and is thankful for the continuous support from students, teachers, and administrators.  

“I am extremely proud to be one of the Spanish Club Sponsors. The club members come in the mornings, during their out periods, free time that is hard to come by, and help with the preparations for the event. We are grateful for the National Honor Society, Law Enforcement, and Culinary students for providing the meal. I would also like to thank the Administrators for allowing the Spanish Club to put on such a big event. They have been extremely supportive and helpful in putting together the event,” said Albarez.
