The fang-tastic trick-or-treat tradition at the Casey Administration Building has been a boo-beloved event for years, eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike. This year, around 200 students from Special Education, Life Skills, and FOCUS programs joined in the trick-or-treating fun. Although their bags started hauntingly empty, each student finished the day with a full stash of goodies and treats from each department.
This year’s decoration themes ranged from Space, 101 Dalmatians, Spiderman, Jungle, Scooby Doo, Friday Night Lights, and many more!
Oftentimes, Special Education students are not able to participate in traditional trick-or-treating events on Halloween. Jennifer Pierce, Director of Special Education, believes that the annual Central Office Trick-or-Treat Frenzy creates a sense of inclusion and community for both students and families.
“The Trick or Treat Frenzy allows students and their families to safely do something that the rest of us take for granted. It allows families to participate without the fear of being overwhelmed, unsafe, or judged. Here they are welcomed, included, and we have created an environment that is inclusive and safe,” said Pierce. “Halloween is one of those things that can be overwhelming, it can be unsafe if they have severe food allergies or other physical issues, and it can be hard for parents to get them transported. We help take the challenges away so that they can have a sense of normalcy.”
Special Education students are seen laughing, clapping, smiling, and squealing with joy, as they walk through each office’s elaborate decorations. Central Office staff have just as much fun meeting each of the students.
“The staff LOVES this event! The staff at Central Office go all out and I love watching the adults engaging in pure joy! This is their time to really interact and get to know our students more personally. We are creating lasting memories for most of our kiddos. This may be their only chance to be able to participate in Halloween,” said Pierce.
Pierce wants to extend her gratitude to all staff who make this annual event possible each year.
“We are so grateful and thankful for our Casey staff that continue to go above and beyond to give our students such a wonderful experience,” said Pierce. “Our staff is truly invested in our most vulnerable students, and we are fortunate to be led by some of the best in the business of kids."
Frenship would also like to thank Porch Perfect Lubbock, who helped make this event special. Memori Jackson, a Frenship High School Special Education Instructor who owns Porch Perfect donated several pumpkins lining the entrance to the Casey Administration Building.
