Reese Education Center Hosts the U.S. Marines

Throughout the year, Elyse Evans, the Communities In Schools Coordinator at Reese Education Center, invites guest speakers to present various career paths to the students. She launched this program last year in an effort to get the Reese students to start thinking about post-graduation life and exploring future careers, colleges, and trade schools.

On Tuesday, Reese Education Center welcomed Staff Sergeant Sean Cook from the local U.S. Marines recruitment office for a presentation on the opportunities and benefits of joining the Marines. Staff Sergeant Cook emphasized that the Marines offer more than just combat training, highlighting how students can further their education and build careers in almost any industry. The students at the Reese Education Center attentively listened to Staff Sergeant Cook during the presentation and stayed afterward to engage in a Q&A session.

Evans stated that there is almost always a group of students interested in joining the military and makes sure to bring in the local recruiters. She encourages any student who is unsure about their post-graduation plans to attend.

“Many students still aren’t sure what they want to do career-wise as they approach graduation,” said Evans. “They may not have the means to afford college, but don’t want to continue working in a ‘high school job’ position. The military could open doors to so many career paths.”

The military may offer an ideal path for many students, helping to remove financial barriers by covering the cost of education. Even for those not planning a long-term military career, it can serve as a stepping stone toward their dream profession. For students who find a passion for military life, it provides a stable job with a reliable income.

Throughout the year, the students have had the opportunity to listen to professionals and representatives from a variety of industries and educational institutions. Evans will continue to explore future opportunities with the students.
