Reese Education Center Students Tour South Plains College

Every February, South Plains College invites area high school seniors to campus for a preview of college life during the annual Senior Sneak Preview Day. This year Elyse Evans, the Communities in Schools Coordinator at Reese Education Center, attended the event with 12 students.

This campus visit aligns with Evans’ year-round efforts to educate her students about the various opportunities available to them after graduation. Throughout the year, students have heard from guest speakers representing a range of industries and college programs, but for many, this was their first time stepping onto a college campus.

“So many of our students have never explored careers, colleges, and trade schools on their own.” said Evans. “It can be intimidating. Field trips like this can give students the confidence and determination to research, ask questions, and make a plan for their future.”

At the SPC Senior Sneak Preview, the students split into groups based on the area of study they wish to pursue at SPC. Every group goes on a campus tour and then gets an in depth look at the career or program they have chosen. After the tours, students had the opportunity to meet representatives of SPC student clubs and organizations.

Evans emphasized that this tour is especially valuable for her students, as the majority of Reese graduates who pursue post-secondary education choose to enroll at South Plains College. For those who may feel intimidated by the idea of a four-year bachelor’s degree, exploring a shorter, two-semester trade program can open new possibilities.

While many of the students on the tour were already considering SPC after graduation, not all had a clear direction for their future careers. Evans noted that the experience provided much-needed clarity for some, citing one student who approached her afterward, excited about their newfound decision.

The South Plains College Senior Sneak Preview was a valuable opportunity for the Reese Education Center seniors to explore their future. With continued support from Evans and hands-on experiences like this, these students are gaining the confidence and knowledge to take their next steps toward post-graduation success.
